Christie Estates

Tapeley Park Gardens, North Devon, invites you to explore a unique landscape. Its gardens combine sculpted Italian Terraces, enchanted woods, coastal views and the exotic wildness of one of the country’s oldest permaculture gardens.

Family and dog friendly, Tapeley sits at the heart of the Christie Estate, which also includes Braunton Burrows and Saunton Beach.

Located near the picturesque village of Instow, Tapeley Park sits at the heart of the wider Christie Estate. Tapeley is a private (but welcoming) estate that sits on the North Devon coast but feels like a different world at times thanks to its unique landscape and the tranquillity of the surroundings. Travel back to Victorian times with a stroll through the beautiful Italian Terraces and walled vegetable garden and see the rewards of working with nature in one of the country’s oldest permaculture gardens.

It’s the perfect location to leave the humdrum behind, its wildness is loved by families who can explore natural nooks and choose a spot to have a picnic. The family dog is welcome too! For garden enthusiasts Tapeley is full of surprises; chocolate berries and electric daisies to 200-year-old trees and a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife. Throughout the year, Tapeley hosts events – from open-air theatre and family days to dog shows – and details of upcoming events, along with prices and opening times, can be found on the Tapeley Park Information Facebook page.

The Christie family has long had an association with the nearby village of Instow, which is popular for its postcard views and pleasant village-side beach. From here you can look over the estuary towards Braunton Burrows, also part of the Christie Estate.

Braunton Burrows is a 1,800-acre sand dune system that is one of the largest in the UK. A vast expanse of dunes and slacks, it is at the heart of the UNESCO biosphere and is a site of scientific interest thanks to the abundance of wildlife that thrives there. The Burrows in Spring is carpeted with brightly coloured flowers and offers excellent walking and nature-spotting opportunities. Close to the village of Braunton, it is easily accessed from car parks at Crow Point, Sandy Lane and Saunton Beach. The public has access to the Burrows and dogs are welcome too (although must be on leads in areas where livestock is grazing). Visit the Braunton Burrows Public Information page on Facebook for latest updates.

The Burrows extend to Saunton Beach, which is also owned by the Christie Estate. Saunton comprises of a vast beach (at low tide it is a 1 km wide) and is a favourite with families and surfers, especially long boarders and those new to the sport. Saunton Beach car park has a range of amenities including a beach shop, café, restaurant, surf shop and two surf schools.
