Things to do for free in North Devon
Geo-caching
Take the kids treasure hunting with a spot of geo-caching . A great way to explore the countryside and immense fun too. Its totally free although you will need a smartphone. There are thousands of geo-caches across North Devon and Exmoor, all waiting to be discovered and logged. Most contain little items of treasure that the kids can 'swap' out. Pack a picnic and make a day of it!

Rock-pooling
Discover anemonies, crabs, shrimps and fish in rock pools teaming with life. Check for low tide, then head for the beach. Ilfracombe Tunnels Beaches , Westward Ho! and Instow beach are particularly good for safe shallow explorations.

Cycle the Tarka Trail
Pack a picnic and head out for a days adventure through the countryside. Level cycling with plenty of picnic spots and refreshment areas. Cycle to Instow and take a picnic on the sand dunes. Free Parking at Watergate Bridge near Torrington. Sat nav postcode: EX32 0DQ

Paddle and play

Sand duning
Head for Braunton Burrows and spend the day in the sand dunes. Huge dunes, great sweeps of sand, sandy paths to explore and the perfect sun trap for a picnic on a summer's day. Free parking too! Sat nav postcode EX34 7HQ

Crabbing
Pop down to Bideford Quay , Appledore or Hartland Quay and introduce the little ones to the joys of crabbing. Several waterside shops sell crabbing lines, and all you need is a few slices of bacon and some patience...
