Devon County Council and Somerset County Council in partnership with Plymouth, Torbay and North Somerset Councils are delivering a project to roll out broadband to those parts of our counties not covered by current providers. 

The project aims to deliver improved broadband (2mbps) to every business and community across Devon and Somerset by 2015.  To deliver superfast broadband (24mbps) to at least 85% of the area by 2015 with 100% by 2020.

How you can help

We need to convince the broadband providers that we are an attractive proposition, and that there is a demand for high speed broadband, which in turn will give them a good potential return on their investment.

Businesses, individuals, schools, residents and communities are being asked to complete a short survey (online or over the phone) to register their current broadband speed, the types of activity limited by current speeds, and what improved connectivity might mean. 

For example:  A business owner might register that he is paying £20 a month for a 2mbps service, actually receiving 1.5mbps, and that as a result his business cannot compete online and his productivity is impacted.  If the business had access to a 5mbps broadband service then he could develop his online retail offering and improve efficiency.

An individual might be paying £10 a month for 1mbps.  He is unable to shop online or interact with friends and family as the service is very unreliable and downloads keep crashing.  His school child is affected as she cannot support her studies with online research.  The provision of a 3mbps service would keep this family connected and improve the childs studies.

You get the picture?  All it takes is a few minutes, and the more survey's completed, the more compelling a proposition Devon and Somerset look to the broadband providers.

Firstly,  find out how much you are paying each month for your internet service, and what service you are receiving (there is a speed checker within the survey if you are not sure)
