Saunton Sands, for dunes and space: this untamed three-mile stretch of beach on the north Devon coast is backed by Braunton Burrows, one of the largest sand dune systems in Britain and a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. Rare wildflowers and butterflies live amid the towering dunes, and Atlantic rollers sweep on to the vast sandy beach.
Croyde beach, three miles from Saunton Sands along the winding coast road, is the spot for surfing and bodyboarding. Wetsuits outnumber bikinis here and beach volleyball games attract a lively young crowd. In the summer, lifeguards keep a watchful eye on surfers and kayakers; do not venture beyond the safety flags.
