Braunton Burrows Biosphere Reserve
Braunton Burrows is one of the largest sand dune systems in Britain. At the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve it is an internationally recognised site of scientific interest.
Braunton Burrows is a wide open space typified by its dramatic scenery which comprises of steep-sided high sand dunes and shifting sands. Wild open grassland plains and hollows (slacks) are interspersed with dense patches of scrubby bush. With its abundance of colourful summer flora, it is best visited in the summer (from June - August).
The Burrows runs parallel to Saunton Beach. The 1800 acre site is separated into 3 zones. Zone 1 begins at the north, by Saunton beach car park, and Zone 3 begins at Crow Point. A variety of interests coexist on the Burrows, which is owned by the Christie Estate, from land management through livestock grazing to use for MOD training exercises.
The Burrows is open to the public and is a popular destination for recreational users such as hikers, dog walkers and nature lovers. However, the Estate does have some guidelines for use – such as having dogs on leads in livestock zones – and asks the public to respect these.
The Burrows is best accessed from Sandy Lane and Saunton Beach car park, both of which can be accessed via the road that runs between the villages of Braunton and Croyde.
Public Transport Directions
The most convenient bus stop is located at Saunton Beach. There is a regular bus service from Braunton and Croyde to Saunton Beach.
